Do rich people get off easier when they break the law? Simply put, yes they do. The three cases provided to you will prove this fact. As Carl Sandburg once said “money is power, freedom, a cushion, the root of all evil, the sum of blessings”. In summary if you are rich you can do as you please with little fear of consequences. How do you get away with murdering four people? The show may talk about something different, but all you really need is to be rich. Affluenza: noun: psychological malaise affecting wealthy young people, symptoms include lack of feelings of guilt, essentially being too rich to know right from wrong. This unorthodox defense surprised many, including the prosecutor they said “I’ve never heard of a case where the defense is being too rich”. While drunk driving at the age of sixteen Ethan Couch hit and killed four people. His only punishment was ten years of probation, that was until he broke his probation. Ethan broke his probation by going on a vacation to Mexico. He later was found, arrested, and fined heavily for the man hunt. Samuel Curtis Johnson, a multi billionaire convicted of molesting a girl three times when she was between the ages of twelve-fifteen. Johnson pleaded “guilty”. An average person can be sentenced up to 99 years in prison and anywhere from $5,000-$50,000. Johnson was sentenced to just four months in prison and only fined a mere $6,000 compared to his multibillion dollar fortune. Johnson wasn’t even registered as a sex offender. What is worse than a child molester? A man who rapes his three year old daughter. It’s hard to figure out what’s worse the fact that this is daughter, or that she’s three years old. In 2014 Robert H. Richards IV was convicted for raping his three year old daughter. It would be expected to say he is in jail to this day, but that is false. Richards isn’t in jail in fact he never was. The judge's reasoning was idiotic but simple “he wouldn’t fare well in jail”. His punishment was an eight year probation. However a class B felony, like the one Robert commited, can land up to 60 year for a first offence. The fact Robert only received an eight year probation is ridiculous, and undermines our legal system. In conclusion, rich people DO get off easier when they break the law. This blog has repeatedly show you can do as you want if you have enough money. “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”- Martin Luther King jr. Unjusticestes are everywhere in this world and the source of many is a biased legal system. Do not let these injustice stand, we must stand up to injustice in the world. Work cited Gonchar, Michael.
